Frequently Asked Questions
Clear answers to the questions families ask most.
Pricing & Payment
How much does direct cremation cost at Southwest Cremation?
Our all-inclusive direct cremation is $999. This covers everything — removal, cremation, an urn, two death certificates, and return of remains. There are no hidden fees, just the tax.
Are there any additional costs beyond the $999 price?
For most families, $999 covers everything. Additional death certificates, service beyond our 60-mile area, or optional memorial goods may have separate costs, which we'll always discuss with you upfront. If your loved one weighs over 300 pounds, additional costs may apply.
What payment options are available?
We accept cash, check, crypto, and major credit or debit cards. Payment can be completed securely online as part of the arrangement process. Please note that cards incur a processing charge.
The Cremation Process
What is direct cremation?
Direct cremation is the simplest form of cremation. Your loved one is cared for with dignity and cremated without a prior viewing or ceremony. It's the most affordable cremation option and gives families the flexibility to plan a memorial on their own terms and timeline.
How long does the cremation process take?
After all paperwork and required waiting periods are completed, cremation typically takes place within 3-5 business days. The actual cremation process takes 2-3 hours. We keep you informed throughout, and you can monitor status in the family portal.
Can family members be present during the cremation?
Southwest Cremation does not permit witnessing cremations as a matter of policy.
What happens to medical devices like pacemakers?
Medical devices such as pacemakers must be removed before cremation for safety reasons. We coordinate this as part of our standard process at no additional charge.
Arrangements & Process
Can I really complete everything online?
Yes. Southwest Cremation was the first cremation service in Springfield where you can complete the entire arrangement process online — from getting a quote to signing authorizations. It takes about 30 minutes, and you can do it from anywhere.
What if I'm not comfortable doing everything online?
That's completely fine. Our licensed funeral directors are available 24/7 by phone. We can walk you through every step, answer your questions, and help you complete arrangements however you're most comfortable. If you prefer, we're also available to meet with you in person at our office or at your home. You may also find our guide on what to do first helpful.
What do I need to do first when a loved one passes?
Contact us. We're available 24/7. We'll guide you through everything — from initial transfer of your loved one to completing the necessary paperwork. You don't need to have anything figured out beforehand.
Legal & Documentation
How do I get death certificates in Missouri?
Two certified death certificates are included in our $999 price. We can procure additional certificates at $11/ea (state price). You can also order copies through VitalChek.com or at local health departments. We handle the initial filing on your behalf.
Is there a waiting period for cremation in Missouri?
Missouri requires a 24-hour waiting period after death before cremation can take place. Additionally, a signed cremation authorization form is required. We manage all of these requirements for you.
Do I need to purchase a casket for cremation?
No. Missouri law does not require a casket for cremation. An alternative container is included in our $999 price.
Do you notify Social Security?
Yes. When we start the death certificate in the state electronic system and enter the Social Security number, it will send notification of death to Social Security automatically.
After Cremation
How will I receive the cremated remains?
Cremated remains are returned in your choice of a wood or metal urn, included in our price. We can deliver within 60 miles of Springfield or arrange for you to pick up at your convenience. We can also ship remains via USPS for an additional fee.
Can I still have a memorial service with direct cremation?
Absolutely. Many families choose direct cremation specifically because it gives them the freedom to plan a memorial service, celebration of life, or private gathering on their own timeline — days, weeks, or even months later.
What can I do with cremated remains?
Families choose many meaningful options: keeping the urn at home, scattering in a meaningful location (check local regulations), burial in a cemetery, or dividing remains among family members using keepsake urns. There's no single right answer — it's whatever feels right for your family.
