What Does Direct Cremation Include?

A Complete Breakdown of Services and What's Included

Understanding exactly what you're paying for helps you make informed decisions. Here's everything included in our direct cremation service.

When you're arranging cremation for a loved one, understanding exactly what services are included helps you make informed decisions and avoid unexpected costs. Direct cremation is the simplest and most affordable cremation option, but that doesn't mean it's lacking in dignity or care.

At Southwest Cremation, we believe in complete transparency. Here's exactly what our direct cremation service includes—and what it doesn't.

What's Included in Direct Cremation

Our $999 Direct Cremation Package Includes:

1

Basic Services of Funeral Director and Staff

Professional oversight of all arrangements, document filing, and coordination with the crematory. This includes our licensed funeral directors' time and expertise throughout the process.

2

Removal and Transfer of Remains

Respectful transportation of your loved one from the place of death to our facility within 60 miles of Springfield, MO. Available 24/7, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

3

Refrigeration and Care

Proper refrigeration and sheltering of remains in a climate-controlled facility until cremation takes place. This is required by Missouri law and ensures dignified care.

4

Alternative Cremation Container

A simple, dignified container made of wood or fiberboard for the cremation process. Missouri law does not require a casket for cremation, and this container is included at no extra charge.

5

The Cremation Process

The actual cremation at a licensed Missouri crematory. The process typically takes 2-3 hours, and remains are handled individually and with dignity throughout.

6

Choice of Urn

Your choice of a wood or metal urn for the cremated remains. We provide quality urns that honor your loved one—no cheap plastic containers.

7

Certified Death Certificates

Two certified copies of the death certificate are included. These are essential for settling estates, claiming insurance, and other legal matters.

8

Documentation and Permits

Filing of all necessary permits and documents, including the cremation authorization and coordination with the physician for death certificate completion.

9

Return of Cremated Remains

Delivery of the urn and cremated remains to your family within 60 miles of Springfield, or arrangement for pickup at your convenience.

10

24/7 Support

Round-the-clock availability for questions and support throughout the process. Our licensed funeral directors are always just a phone call away.

What's NOT Included in Direct Cremation

Understanding what's not included helps you plan accordingly. Direct cremation intentionally does not include services that many families don't need or want:

  • ×Viewing or Visitation — Direct cremation does not include a formal viewing or visitation at a funeral home.
  • ×Funeral Ceremony — No funeral service or memorial at the funeral home is included.
  • ×Embalming — Not required for direct cremation and not included.
  • ×Additional Death Certificates — Only 2 are included; additional copies are available for a fee.
  • ×Shipping of Ashes — Delivery beyond 60 miles or shipping to another location.
  • ×Urn Upgrades — Premium or specialized urns beyond the standard wood or metal option.
  • ×Obituary Publication — Newspaper obituary fees are separate.

Why Direct Cremation Might Be Right for Your Family

Direct cremation is chosen by thousands of Missouri families each year for practical, financial, and personal reasons:

Affordability

At $999, direct cremation costs 60-80% less than traditional funeral home cremation, which typically ranges from $2,000-$3,000 in Springfield.

Simplicity

Many families prefer a simple, dignified process without the complexity and formality of traditional funeral services.

Flexibility

Without a funeral home timeline, families can plan a memorial service, celebration of life, or private gathering on their own schedule.

Personalization

Families can honor their loved one in their own way—at home, in a park, at a church, or any meaningful location.
