Obituary

Timothy Marvin Smith, 69, of Springfield, Missouri, passed away on October 23, 2024.

Tim was born on February 25, 1955, in Honolulu, in the then territory of Hawaii, to the late James William Smith, Sr., and Virginia Bond.

Tim grew up in California and Texas, graduating from Ingleside High School, Ingleside, Texas in 1973, before moving to San Diego, California for most of his life. He worked in the computer industry before retiring in 2022 and moved to Springfield to be near family.

Tim had a life-long love of learning and earned many college degrees in various disciplines. He loved the water and enjoyed living on a sailboat for several years. His admiration of French oceanographer, Jacques Cousteau, inspired him in his younger years to be an avid scuba diver. He also liked playing tennis and bicycle riding. More recently he was fond of shooting at the range. As a founding member of the motorcycle club, Wild Hogs of Anarchy (WHOA), he enjoyed taking long motorcycle rides with friends and family along the west coast and across the country, seeing the solar eclipse in Illinois and Tennessee in 2017. He was a gifted musician, who was self-taught on both the guitar and piano. His mother discovered that he had an ear for music when at the age of 5, without any instruction, Tim started playing the Marine Corps Hymn on the piano, in honor of his father who was a Marine. The song, The Little Drummer Boy, always reminded his mother of Tim and his musical talents.

Through his mother, Tim is descended from Revolutionary War patriot and soldier, Colonel John Bond of Beaufort, North Carolina, his 6th great grandfather who, in 1776, as a Captain fought in the Battle of Rayburn Creek, North Carolina, defeating the British.

Tim is preceded in death by his parents; his siblings, Myra Annette Smith and Stephen Paul Smith, who both passed away as infants; and his loyal canine companions, Whiskey, an Irish Setter, and Sally, a Golden Retriever. He is survived by his son, Timothy Patrick Smith of San Diego, California; his wife of 31 years, Patricia Innis Smith of San Diego, California; his stepdaughters, Christie Crook Craig and Marilyn Crook Naas, both of Chesapeake, Virginia; his siblings, Jamie (Chris) Smith of Springfield and Susan Bond (Steven Lorcher) of Chesapeake, Virginia; and his nieces and nephews, Erica Smith Miller, James W. Smith III, Brad Lorcher-Bond, John Lorcher-Bond, and Lauren Lorcher-Bond.

“Like the dolphin who guides you; You bring us beside you; To light up the darkness and show us the way;…And free as the wind-swell; Joyful and loving in letting it be.” “Calypso” by John Denver

In keeping with Tim’s wishes, no memorial or service is planned. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Tim’s name to Ocean Conservancy, https://oceanconservancy.org, or another organization that protects the oceans.
